Planning a Marketing Strategy

Marketing your products/services is not an easy trick. It takes time and knowledge of trends, popular interests and more; however, hiring a professional marketing firm can costs thousands of dollars. A new business needs to be frugal but needs to be seen. This is where your 'sweat-equity' comes into play. Planning a marketing strategy and carrying it out takes time - your time. If you can manage a couple hours every week, you can achieve this marking plan.

The following tips will get you started in spreading the word in your marketing niche.
  • If you have products, take good photos of them and post them on photo-sharing sites. When you sign up for these sites, remember to use your business name as your user name.

  • You know your business, why not share what you know with the online community? Set up a weekly newsletter and explain how to best use your products or services. Explain how you found other uses for your products. Give tips on how to clean an item, make a special stitch or clean up after a bathtub overflow. Any advice you give for free is welcomed. I use MailChimp online mail service. It is free and so easy to use. They take care of the sign up and database. Your Web designer can set up a special page to encourage people to sign up.

  • If you do something creative and want to share it, it's in your best interest to learn how to video tape yourself doing it. Creating a video is a great way to teach someone about your product, service or shop. You can post it on video-sharing sites. Not sure where to start? Check out the tutorials already done in your niche. What are they doing well and what don't you like?

  • Many people may tell you to learn about Search Engine optimization. This is not an easy thing to do. In fact many Web designers do minimal coding for the search engines and leave the in-depth SEO to the professionals. When you get to the point where your business in bringing in some money, set some aside and hire an SEO professional. They are worth the investment. Learning SEO can take weeks (or months if you can't sit down for a full weekend to learn portions of it). You need to determine what your time is worth.
Remember to keep handing out your business cards, attending local functions (and handing out your business cards) and participating in both local and online projects. Don't overload yourself, but show people you care about your community.
